A Drafting and Peer Editing Guide for your Gilgamesh Narratives

Make a clear analogy to your selected episode from the epic.  Remember, you are to take an episode from the epic and place it in a modern-day setting.  Be sure to make concrete parallels between your narrative and the epic.

Clearly set up your exposition to the reader. Your narrative should creatively engage the reader by setting out a well-developed situation. Be sure to introduce a clear narrator and complex characters.

Use narrative techniques and development to enrich your piece.  A strong narrative is developed using dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection.  Be sure to incorporate some of these sophisticated narrative techniques:  engaging dialogue, artistic pacing, vivid description, complex reflection, and a detailed plot line to develop experiences, events, and characters.

Be sure that your narrative is well organized and cohesive. Your narrative should follow a logical sequence of events.  Be sure to create a seamless progression of experiences or events using some of the following techniques: chronology, flashback, foreshadowing, suspense, etc.—to sequence events so that they build on one another to create a coherent whole.

Pay attention to your diction and syntax.  Use sensory language and details to create a vivid picture of the events, setting, and characters. Incorporate sentence variety and precise diction to help create a clear and fluid reading experience.

Be sure to craft a strong conclusion. Your narrative should move to a conclusion that artfully follows from and thoughtfully reflects on what is experienced, observed, or resolved over the course of the narrative.
